Southland Tales

Southland Tales ★★

Richard Kelly successfully channels the inimitably melancholic yet whimsical chaos of his astonishing debut, Donnie Darko, into this overstuffed meditation on a smorgasbord of post-9/11 anxieties in an alternate future. It never really hangs together without any prior knowledge of the film's intentions - though I doubt it actually intends to in a traditional sense (just like reality, I guess) - and, therefore, makes for a frustrating and often pretentious watch. On first viewing, Southland Tales screams of its reach exceeding its grasp, but I would like to return to it someday having delved into what supposedly makes it tick.
