NWA The Great American Bash '88: The Price for Freedom

    ★★½

the match with like the ziggurat of cages stacked on top of one another is one of the most ridiculous feats of engineering i've ever seen, that poor referee hanging 40 feet in the air in a tiny cage made out of chainlink that they probably bought the day before from some random contractor, the whole thing like an insane jigsaw trap that the wrestlers have to escape from. unfortunately much better in theory than in execution, as is the…

    NWA Starrcade '87: Chi-Town Heat!

    ★★★

did NWA/WCW ever come under litigation from lucasfilm for "skywalker" matches?? i gave this an extra half star for the bit where lex luger flexes and then dusty rhodes struts around the ring mocking him. also in the first match they introduce this one wrestler as being "from every girl's dream" and then they introduce sting (in his PPV debut) as being "from every man's nightmare." i simply love wrestling

more technically proficient and seamless than starrcade 83 but much less interesting. i love that pre-Common Man Boogie, dusty rhodes came out to a sexy quiet storm instrumental jam

so i watched up to like 92 in wwf ppvs and 1) i needed a vibe change (i'm fucking sick of seeing hulk hogan win and i never wanna hear "real american" again 2) i thought that since i was getting into monday night wars territory it might be good to contextualize some for WCW/NWA/jim crockett. if wrestlemania 3 is griffith and wrestlemania X7 is citizen kane, this is edison: very conscious of itself as a historical event and new…

    WWE WrestleVision: The Wrestling Classic

    ★★★½

a truly bazinian moment at 1985's The Wrestling Classic: when terry funk spit chewing tobacco on the camera lens. more than wrestlemania 1 this rly strikes me as the prototype for future WWF/WWE ppvs. mania 1 had camp touches & celeb cameos like ali + liberace, a combination of characters which literally feels like a perfect metaphor for pro wrestling as a form, but it also still feels much more indebted to boxing as a form almost and is much less…

i made this diy 3D tribute to jackass and evel knievel and the sad physical absurdities of teen masculinity in 2018 but it always felt a little unfinished... remixed and re-edited and submitted to some f*stivals, but lmk if anyone is interested in a link 👀
