As an immigration story this was a very good movie though the fact that they couldn’t build out the fire culture much beyond imagery pulled from actual cultures holds it back. As a opposites attract romance it’s a very good movie held back from how it has to indulge briefly in some toxic tropes to get to its big finale. As both an immigration story and a opposites attract romance… well…

It’s a remake that knows this story has been told dozens of times before and will be told dozens of times again and gets how inherently sad that is on some level. As much as Peter Pan and Captain Hook might grow and want to put away their eternal battle and move on like Wendy and the Darlings and even the Lost Boys get to time after time, they can’t really because they are Peter Pan and Captain Hook and they need to keep being those things because what else is there for them if the story ends?

In a way Hubie Halloween is a metaphor for how the public has been treating Adam Sandler's comedic output on Netflix the past several years. Once a year he releases one of these movies and from Sandy Wexler onward, these films have been sweet, funny, and generally delightful (Not Ridiculous 6 and Do Over. Those suck). And yet they get met with jeers, eye-rolls, and the internet equivalent of throwing things at them, much like Hubie Dubois encounters in this…
