Starred Up

Starred Up ★★★★

So incredibly captivating.

We follow young Eric Love as he enters an adult prison (the title means going from juvenile prison to adult prison early). The standard prison story themes apply: negotiating one's path through the various groups in prison, those that mean you harm and those that try to help. The film manages to display these groups in an original form by letting the viewer discover what's what through Eric's eyes. We aren't always sure what is going on because neither is he.

The film explores the rehabilitation vs punishment views of prison, which I always find to be a most interesting question.

Fantastic performances by all, especially Jack O'Connell as Eric, Ben Mendelsohn and Rupert Friend.

One of the best prison drama's I've seen.
