    Rome, Open City

Great film, terrible subtitles! The following subs are from the same scene but from two different releases:

    Arrow Academy release:
The truth is... I believe in God.

    Criterion release:
The truth is, I believe in God.
    Do you work?
I used to. In a fuse factory.
But they threw us out. The Germans are taking everything.
    It must be Don Pietro.
    Hello, Don Pietro.
Excuse me. I'll be across the hall.
Thanks for coming. Don't mention it.

An interesting experiment. Some of these very short shorts are more successful than others at representing the fragmented nature of the dream state. Some try a little too hard with surreality, others make the mistake (in my opinion) of trying to insert narrative and some just don't bother with the brief and do what they want. Overall, I really liked it and it's very hard to get bored when each short is only 42 seconds long. It's on the youtube and only 42 minutes long, so stick it on in your lunch break.

This is a Hard-Boiled police story in the grand tradition of Harry Callaghan, Popeye Doyle and Frank Bullitt. Everything is black and white, the hero does what needs to be done to save the day and the brass at City…

    August Underground

I know I've been absent for a few weeks but my wife has had another Multiple Sclerosis relapse and is due to go back into hospital for another course of treatment - it's the same chemotherapy as they give leukaemia patients. Plus I've had to do a load of construction/carpentry work on my daughters bedroom and other assorted shit. Anyway, I thought I should at least try to get back into the swing of things and what better than the…
