Gary Hollingsbee’s review published on Letterboxd:
Unusually flat for a Pixar movie. It seemed to me that the whole thing was rather subdued. For a movie based around music, it just didn’t hit the right notes. The supernatural/afterlife parts were creepy (and seem to be drawn from some conspiracy beliefs about holographic universes and soul harvesting) and the plot just a bit too messy. The ultimate message seemed to me to be to give up your passion because you’ll be happier being a regular, mundane person. Learn to be thankful for what you’ve got. I liked the parts where we saw Joe’s life, people he knew and his love of music. A movie about that - rather than ghosts, hippies in sailing ships and talking cats - would have been much better.
