Tenet ★★★★★

(2020 ranking)
(Christopher Nolan ranking)

Remember when Inception came out and it was described as a ‘mind-fuck’, ‘clunky‘ and ‘confusing’? But now it’s loved, celebrated and easily understood, and I feel Tenet will go down that same exact path.

One of the main criticisms I’ve seen of this are the (brilliantly earth-shattering) score drowning out dialogue, which indeed it does but not the extent I was really expecting it to. Also the lack of character development was often brought up in reviews, but is there much of that in any Nolan film? (No one seemed to care about it in Dunkirk?)

Yes, the plot is a little basic, ‘stop World War III’, but I think it had to be simple because the concept of inversion and seeing this unfold on screen could be difficult to get your head around for many people.

This was one of the most enjoyable movies I’ve seen in a long long time though. There are so many memorable scenes that are unlike anything your eyes have ever been privileged enough to witness.

Reverse car chases, the final ‘red and blue’ fight sequence is incredible, the plane, the opening opera scene. Damn.

Can’t wait to see this again already.
