Darren Hughes’s review published on Letterboxd:
Carax understands that whenever Adam Driver is on screen, the scene is mostly about Adam Driver. His body, charisma, presence overwhelm every other creative decision. I can’t think of many other actors who have that particular power. Marilyn Monroe, maybe? Timothy Carey? Certainly Denis Lavant. Once I understood Driver was another Carax stand-in and the film was in part a reckoning with the death of Golubeva, ANNETTE was almost too much to take. This movie is a miracle.
