But would never take a way the visceral feel that William Lustig and Larry Cohen were able to accomplish with this bombastic action slasher; a film firmly rooted in its 1988 NYC ambiance.
A more exploitation-laced version of Heathers with its own blend of dark comedy. From the poster and the title, you would think this is a by the books slasher but it actually has some smart ideas at play. Questions about social hierarchy and how we grow hungry for more power through violence. Is this Ancient Rome or High School?
But it’s still B-movie schlock with hang gliding deaths, hearing aid deaths, unnecessary explosions, naked frolicking in the water, and mid day threesomes. It’s all a wild ride meeting my favorite 90 minute sweet spot.
But seriously, where are the adults????
I feel pity for everyone who hasn’t seen this film before and even more pity for those that will miss this latest re-release in theaters. Thank you to A24 for putting this out there and making me feel emotions that only film and music can provide. It was a long, rough week and this was the perfect cure.
Stop Making Sense isn’t just a concert film featuring the Talking Heads, it’s a living, breathing work of art.
