Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom ★★★½

This is it. The final film with Chadwick Boseman. It was a career that should have lasted far longer then it did, but we have still been gifted this moment in history to witness his astounding ability on screen.

I'll be honest still; this film won't be for everyone. It is very slow at times but extremely powerful at others. It's not a story someone such as myself has been familiar with at all; but it's one totally worth telling on film.

Everyone in this is wonderful; Viola is always on fire. But it has been said before; and I will say it again; but this film would almost be a completely boring drag from start to finish if not for Chadwick's energy.

Just to keep in mind; the man was going through his illness as he was filming his scenes for this. That only makes his performance that much more hard hitting and emotional for myself. It's one of his best ever.

Viola is the star of this film. She is wonderful in this role. I love that power she brings to all her scenes; simply another great performance to add to her illustrious, award winning career that will keep getting better.

But this is Chadwick's movie. For not only is it his last. But he is the heart and soul. I felt his pain, his anger, his frustration and his passion for the music that he wanted to keep playing.

It is not one of the best movies of the year. I did not love this film. But I loved Viola and I especially loved Chadwick. This was a tour de force for him, he ended on a beautifully tragic high note as Levee Green.

Thank you Chadwick. We will miss you dearly. Rest in Peace.
