Scanners 1981
In many ways the most straight forward of Cronenbergs early genre cerebral/visceral conflations, Scanners is also deceptively layered, inviting a myriad readings to a seemingly straight forward story (by Cronenberg standards anyways). If The Brood is about the anxieties of love and the domestic family unit (E.G. divorce) then Scanners is about the torments of friendship and our public lives, the elusivness of connection and the nightmare of what it means to be fully known. Closer 2004
Pair this with Polanski’s Carnage. Do not like either movie. But I have more respect for Closer as a) a degrading sex movie and for b) its verbal onslaught, a surprisingly fun and well written shock drama.
