hard not to think of this in contrast to ghatak’s contemporary in the sort of bengali new wave satyajit ray’s apu trilogy — clearly he’s got more contempt for capitalism than Ray does, but this one is juuuust a little less accessible than the 3 apu movies (which are all masterpieces). this one is a REALLY slow burn and the ending totally blew me away. really asks an important question: how many people have we completely lost to denying them a life without dignity?
also: what an incredible use of sound!!!! goddamn
