2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★★

When I was a young kid I watch a lot of movies, most of which I had forgotten. Most of them I vaguely remember, but this movie and Rango are the only two that have really stuck with me. I specifically remember the scene at the end where he goes into the room by with his last and future self, and the baby at the end. For some reason this has just been stuck in my mind for the last 11 years, ever since I was 5 or six. It comes back to me at least once or twice every month. I have probably seen this 15 times in my life, but this was the first rewatch in around 3 or so years.
I have learned to appreciate film so much more within those three years than ever before, so this was a very important rewatch. The visuals are so powerful, that’s probably what struck me as a kid, as nice colors tend to hit the sweet spot on your dopamine receptors. Now I can truly appreciate the genius behind Kubrick's shot composition. Yes his shots  look absolutely stunning, but they are so much more than that. They take on so much more meaning when you look at the subtext, and the connections to The (non-space) Odessy.
I also have a new perspective on this movie after learning about relativity, and how the ending of the movie is not just cool visuals, but is also what could realistically happen if one were to travel at the speed of light. I also love the transition in the beginning so much, where the first tool turns into a spaceship. Honestly the SFX in this is more impressive than what comes out today.

I will be talking more about this on the FilmDump podcast. lol to the channel is in my bio. If anyone has questions for the podcast ask them here.
