Lucas Lyon’s review published on Letterboxd:
A crushing look into the mind of a man losing his hearing. Riz Ahmed couldn’t have played Ruben any better. An empathetic, raw, and touching performance that is one of the best I’ve seen all year. Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci are perfect alongside Ahmed in their supporting roles. The sound design is amazing and it really brought me into Ruben’s POV. It reminded me a lot of the sound design from A Quiet Place. I’ve seen many first time directors burst onto the scene this year, but I don’t think any have made more of an impact on me than Darius Marder with Sound of Metal. The phrase, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone” couldn’t have been more true in it.
