Stree is a pleasant surprise from Bollywood. While not entirely removed from the conventional tropes, it mixes and matches and carves it's own space in the comedy horror sub genre.
Sadly, horror is the film's weakest point. It's over reliance on well worn clichés is hard to overlook. And the cheesy special effects don't help either. It truly is more than the sum of it's parts. The genius lies in marrying this lowbrow horror to larger social issues prevalent in the small town. An approach that sometimes gets your message across with all the subtlety of a bulldozer. But it's a small price to pay.
The film also benefits from a cast of colorful characters. It has it's own unique spin on the sidekick characters. The acting is strong across the board. Damn that Pankaj Tripathi steals every scene he is in!
Love to see more like this from Bollywood...
