I KNOW this was a mortal sin but I had never seen Alien until last night BUT I saw it on a very big screen as the lord intended. Great pacing, great suspense, great elements of horror, not too much but not too little. Ripley is the bad bitch that none of us deserve.
After seeing Marriage Story, I've been newly intrigued to Baumbach's work, whose work I (shh don't tell anyone) hadn't really seen much of. This was the perfect one to visit post Marriage Story. While both vastly different, squid and the whale feels like the beta version of marriage story. it's a divorce story somehow more deeply steeped in anger and selfishness, in betrayal and pretentiousness. It's a little choppier and less fluid, less polished, but still holds strong. There really is no better writer of dialogue in film right now.
