Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ½

Spectacularly ill-judged, from the feather-light tone to the incorporation of Third Reich iconography into the film's twee aesthetic.

I'd previously seen the ending doing the rounds on Twitter but it's even worse in context – a mawkish, naive and self-congratulatory end to a ridiculous fantasy story about misunderstood perpetrators of genocide.

I guess you could be generous and argue that the film presents a rose-coloured view of Nazism because it's supposed to be seen through the eyes of a 10-year-old boy (Sean Baker said this is one of his favourite films of 2019 after all), but I can't believe a kid in JoJo's situation would be anything less than deeply traumatised and incredibly messed up as a result. My opinion? He's a little cunt.
