So glad that this is finally on Criterion!
This is Wes at his most creative, in my opinion. The way he uses aspect ratios that were popular during the different periods of time the film takes place over is so genius, using 1.37:1 for the '30s, 2.40:1 for the '60s, and 1.85:1 for the '80s. The colors are so vibrant and so eye-catching, this has been a running stylistic choice in Wes' work ever since "Fantastic Mr. Fox". We need not dwell on Wes' direction, because we all know it's incredible, and it's better directed than "Birdman" (don't @ me).
This might be the funniest film I've ever seen. Awkward, niche, uncomfortable humor is my favorite kind of humor, and this is absolutely that. Wes' sense of humor is so strange and fascinating, I love it. Alexandre Desplat's score is honestly the best work he's ever done. There are so many themes in this film that almost never fail to send chills down my spine.
I don't need to blabber on about "The Grand Budapest Hotel" any longer, because we all know it and we all love it. It's a pinnacle of modern visual storytelling. Wes is a god, this film's a masterpiece, and if you haven't seen it yet then what the hell are you doing.
