A perfect distillation of Luca Guadagnino’s strengths. And it's interesting that this is his most buzzy film to date since it's also his most restrained work. For the first third or so I was waiting for it to pick up because it's almost deceptively casual and low-key, gradually sneaks up on you and hits you. Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer have very good chemistry but I'd hesitate to call this a "great love story", because it's so rooted in the…

There's a scene in this where John C Reilly says something dramatic about death in Japanese and throws a samurai sword at a gas mask donning Tom Hiddleston, who catches it and walks through a cloud of green smoke, slashing these weird birds left and right as blue blood gushes from their bodies. Hardest I've laughed at a movie in a while.

seeing Chubbuck's suicide recreated in such graphic detail left a gross taste in my mouth, because I think Campos is very aware that Chubbuck's strange death is the selling point of his film and grossly builds up to it and hints at it throughout the film.

Hall gives a committed performance, but I just don't see a point in dramatizing a tragedy like this. My problems with the buildup/reenactment of the suicide aside, I don't think the film works as…

Two narratives wrapped into one film—the cold, vapid art world of LA sucks the soul out of Amy Adams in one, and Jake Gyllenhaal seeks revenge amidst the Texas desert in the other. Unfortunately, juxtaposing these two threads doesn’t do either any favors. Ford flirts with the silly, hot mess potential here (particularly in the Texas desert storyline), but I think his head is too far up his ass for him to fully succumb to the pulpy leanings of his…
