This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I was so, so incredibly fortunate to have seen this film at its premiere at the Missouri Theatre, followed by a Q&A with director Robert Greene and most of the main cast. I am going to spoil some moments from this, so please, do not read this until after you’ve already seen it when it arrives on Netflix this month. Every minute of this film is worth taking in.

At the premiere, Greene said something incredibly interesting, which was that…

It’s funny. After the strong opening action sequence that’s very funny, very gory, and very awesome, we instantly get Deadpool. We know just enough about his backstory to keep us both invested in his character yet curious about his past. Where was Emerald when her father died? Where was Emerald while OJ was driving him to the hospital? Where was Emerald as OJ stood in front of the commercial production crew? When she did show up finally, during her speech about the history of Haywood Hollywood Horses and proper on-set horse etiquette, the one part she flubbed was the number of “greats” of her great-great-great-grandfather— the one part she flubbed was the part about the importance of family. When Emerald…

I knew this wasn’t a good thing to do, but for about half an hour, I couldn’t stop comparing this movie to Alien. Their premises are very similar but I found myself continuously thinking of how Alien is philosophically deeper, has much more memorable characters, and is constructed so that every single element, from its production design to its cinematography, contributes to its overall themes.

I stopped myself, though. Really, Alien and The Thing don’t have much in common outside…
