The Nice Guys

The Nice Guys ★★★★

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe working as a comedic/badass duo sounds pretty wild on paper but somehow it works so well when they spew this fantastic writing at each other.

Setting this story in the 70s was a great choice for this story and the way Shane Black incorporates actual problems society faced back then like gas shortages and smog in the air gives you a great understanding of the times. This film understands what tropes make these films predictable and do whatever they can to stray away from anything we’ve seen or heard before. The writing is great, all of the quick dialogue between Gosling and Crowe and the memorable side characters, all of it was fantastic.

There can be moments where the jokes can be a little hit or miss but it wasn’t enough for me to say that the film wasn’t funny because it was hilarious. I’ve always liked this film and I never get tired of rewatching it.
