Southland Tales ★★★★★

Cannes Cut

A brief word on this versus my memory of the theatrical: the pacing is exponentially better and the story feels a lot more coherent than it did in the theatrical cut. The deliberate pace clarifies a lot more of the action and allows the world to breathe more. Anyway-- onto whatever this is.

A NATIONAL ANTHEM (OF SORTS)

"Oh-- say can you see...
by the dawn's early light:
What so proudly we hailed
at the twilight's last gleaming?"

"Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched,
Were so gallantly streaming?"

"And the rockets' red glare,
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night

"O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

A war machine: fascist regime,
not racist -- nothing quite as basic as that.
Happy 4th of July, Dad's on the grill, Mom's about to cry.
The majesty of that American fat cat.

Time to watch fireworks, collect your perks.
The water's settled so put the boats out.

This is the way the world ends: this is the way the world ends.
This is the way the world ends: this is the way the world ends.

Freedom of speech:
Has it been breached?
Civil liberties: whatever the fuck that means.
Life's a beach:
Can Heaven be reached?
Cigarettes in front of the Flag: black and white movies on tv screens.

Do more cardio: news on the radio;
Democrats on their last legs.
Who gives a fuck? Get in the truck:
drink this country down to the dregs.

Not with a whimper, but with a bang. With a bang.
I got soul but I'm not a soldier. I got soul but I'm not a--
