Pacific Rim ★★

Guillermo del Toro's supposed paean to the Japanese kaiju genre gets all the anime/manga tropes right, but falls hard in execution, mostly by concentrating on the human element when people really wanted to see giant robots beat up massive monsters. So spacing out the pitifully few 'big fight' sequences (nearly all of which are in total darkness, so you can't even tell the robots apart, I mean FFS) is a silly psychodrama about melding minds that's surely intended to construct a unique kind of lore for the 'franchise', but is glaringly superfluous to the story at large. That the lengthy, plodding mess we get was reputedly trimmed down from a much longer cut that delves even deeper into this 'drifting' piffle makes me wonder if Del Toro ever really understood what makes giant monster movies so beloved.
