I went into this one cold, having never seen the anime. Know I'm in the minority but I really enjoyed Death Note. I appreciated Wingard's previous effort, The Guest (ignoring Blair Witch), and he once again lays on (or should I say sneaks in?) the camp and melodrama, especially with the soundtrack selection, which humorously contrasts with various serious onscreen situations. Wingard leans into playing the premise as B-movie absurd, even if the characters in the film don't themselves know…
