Old Joy

Old Joy ★★★★½

Really really really good. Slow, simmering burn at a lean 73-minute runtime, Old Joy has so much to say with such little actual discussion.

The subtle divide between Mark and Kurt is something everyone can personally relate to, and Kurt's journey specifically is devastatingly authentic and melancholic. Yo La Tengo's score immensely enriches the exquisite visual language expressed by Kelly Reichardt, who is WAAAAAAY too overlooked in the indie film scene. Certain Women, Wendy & Lucy, and Old Joy are all equally fantastic slices of Americana set in our own backyard.

Really cool whenever a micro-budget film is able to land BIG themes so well, proves that money isn't the only thing you need to make something worthwhile. Makes me want to go on a hike and shoot some shit.
