Ada, to whom the future belongs, begins the story as a willowy, fragile-eyed thing to whom the idea that she might control her own destiny does not even occur because of the world in which she lives. By the end, with a strength beyond her slight physique and with the help of a few actual spirit guides, she’s entirely in control of her body, spirit, mind, and future. (And possibly one or two others’ as well.)
