Candyman ★★★

I love what this movie is trying to do, exploring the themes of race (in a way that’s somewhat different from the original) and how violence inspires art. It just loses so much focus in the final 20 minutes like DaCosta forgot entirely about the side characters and storylines in favour of really pushing the message across.

Stylistically it’s great, all the performances are great, music’s great and the puppet animation sequences are really cool, I just feel kinda empty like it doesn’t have that ending that really resonates and sticks with you long after you’ve watched it which is probably the film’s biggest problem.

Hopefully we’ll see a continuation of this storyline cause the film sets up something that could be interesting to explore in another film. All in all I liked it, honestly this might grow on me like the original did, guess we’ll have to wait and find out.
