    The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick

    I once made a short film about an evil soccer goaltender, which I thought was a very original idea. Turns out Wim Wenders got there first!

    I've always been ambivalent towards Wenders (love Wings of Desire, don't much care for Paris, Texas) but this one hit the spot - a Camus-like existential peek into a few days of the life of a murderous goalie (played uber-creepily by German actor Arthur Brauss). I guess I just respond enthusiastically to movies that coolly follow a psychopath around for a couple of hours.

Don't get me wrong - I certainly love the idea of watching a purportedly "real" reality show go off the rails (even if American Cannibal kinda played around with this same concept a few years earlier), but that's not really what we get here.     Writer-director George Barry sadly passed away late last year, having never made another film. Truly an under-appreciated cinematic artist. RIP
