    Dogtooth

    ★★★★

This film is crazy. I saw it based upon solely a recommendation of "really bizarre" and it definitely lives up to it. Reminded me somewhat of Mum & Dad, a strange British horror/thriller about a dysfunctional family. In much the same vein, Dogtooth takes the family theme to a whole new and disturbing level.

Do yourself a favour and watch it without reading any plot points or seeing any trailers.

    The Loved Ones

Hilarious and gory, this is such a fun film that doesn't quite go where you expect.

  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    ★★★★

My thoughts during this film probably say a lot more about me than the film, but they started with "hasn't Gary Oldman got REALLY old all of a sudden?", then turned into "ooh it's Sherlock, it's Sherlock!" and ended up with "Mark Strong is pretty much in all my favourite films". This is now one of them.

There's something about spy films that I love. The mystery...the intrigue...the romanticism of it all stirs my soul. I think the modern Bond…

  • Gran Torino

    Gran Torino

    ★★★★

Mr. Eastwood plays a grizzled Korean war vet dealing with the loss of his wife. When one of his young asian neighbours is forced to (attempt to) steal his immaculate Gran Torino car, he develops a relationship with the boy and his family.

If I was King of Hollywood, all Clint Eastwood films that aren't set in the Wild West would have an orangutan called Clyde. This one doesn't, but it certainly didn't suffer from it. It's a heart-warming yet sometimes gruesome tale of acceptance and tolerance. Plus it's Clint - you know it isn't gonna be a stinker.
