Fun but repetitive. Better dialogue than most trash films, I’ll give it that much.
The print is in rough shape and although Kurosawa the director makes a strong debut, I wouldn’t recommend this one to anyone except the completists and the historians. The story is all cliches and the pace they unfold is painfully slow for modern standards. And to think, the original cut was 17 minutes longer!
If you’re willing to go truffle hunting, there are things to enjoy. The Western-dressed baddie Hogaki has a strong look and oleaginous way of moving. Kurosawa’s compositional eye and grand sense of drama poke through.
