Malcolm’s review published on Letterboxd:
Do we actually have control over our own lives? Do the people we choose to be with and love have more control over ourselves than we do? How much of what you remember being your life was just an illusion, or a dream?
As I watching Knight of Cups, and it cut to a new shot, I constantly thought, "there is nothing I would change about the lighting, angle, blocking, etc. of that last shot." Knight of Cups may have the most effective use of sound in any movie I've seen. Every shot blends together, whether that is because of similar composition, complementary colors, or overlapping sound.
Knight of Cups flows like the ocean, with each person's pearl tumbling around on the ocean floor, with every tide another person's pearl is found and another's is lost.
