The Babadook ★★★½

"You can't get rid of the Babadook."

Jennifer Kent's psychological horror flick delves into the manic depressive state of an Australian widow and her journey to overcome her obsession. Everything about the first half of this film works; her love for her lost husband and how that affects her relationship is orchestrated very well.

Kent uses formalism and allegory to give us a literal look into her scarred life, which personally and intimately shows us the hell of depression and the inability to get rid of it. We can only hide it way down; in the locked basement of our mind.

"You can't get rid of the Babadook."
