In Lynch's filmography, this film sticks out like the yellow brick road in The Wizard of Oz. And yet, Lynch's execution is so confident and polished, that I would not believe that this type of movie is far left field for him. It does help that his cast completely buys into the tone of the film: Nic Cage, Laura Dern, and Willem Dafoe, most notably, but even the extensive supporting cast fit the world Lynch manufactured.
