Matt’s review published on Letterboxd:
James Wan has given us an intentionally ridiculous B-movie with Malignant. The film throws out all logic and rationality, there's cheesy dialogue, poor acting, over-dramatic music and a bonkers twist.
I get the sense this movie thinks it's more engaging than it actually is. Wan doesn't keep the movie consistent, there's elements of his past work in here but he doesn't utilize it very well making for a bit of a frustratingly dull movie. The last 30 minutes is complete bonkers and quite fun though and stopped it from being a one star movie. The rest of the movie unfortunately is a bit of a slog and not in the good "slow burn" kind of way. I think Wan was so focused on making a ridiculous movie he forgot to also make an entertaining one.
