"The River" is a beautiful and surreal film. It's imagery is as beautiful as it is dreamy, culminating in final shots that are absolutely splendid. In fact, I wish everything leading to the ending made me feel just the way I felt while watching the final moments. It's not the slow pace, it's not the fact it tries to tell its story in a subtle and intellectual fashion. The problems arise when the aesthetic is give all the attention and the other elements of the image are thrown out. Such acting and deliberately slow pace work, but when it has an objective. The aimless nature of "The River" makes it loser the power the static images convey.
