extraordinary stuff. one of the most accomplished debuts in a minute. the old-school pastiche isn't just for show, Jenkin is the real deal. the superficial elements are inextricable from its consciously amateurish and startingly assured handling of filmic grammar. like so much of the best early career work of a great director, both extremely eager to please and extremely reserved and slight. i love every flaw of this movie and i love that it convinced me of its boldest gambits. can't wait for envys men

Both Sides of the Blade 2022
Denis has this gift of tracing compositions between edits, so that the mise en scene of the previous image is expanded upon by its immediately succeeding shot…like a double exposure in your mind. Performances here are great, and the tension between Lindon’s assured lies and Binoche’s hysteria is staged phenomenally. It feels stupid in an adult way, and real.
