A Woman's Torment 1977
Tara Chung turning in an all-timer insane angry woman performance, but one that feels confident in not privileging the audience to omniscience. Karen is sympathetic but she’s never completely knowable, and the character is served by giving her room to exist and act out and not inviting the viewer in.

Scream VI 2023
Arbitrarily giving this a 1.5 because I gave the previous one a 1. This isn’t an improvement per se but it is a step towards something. I see the requel franchise taking shape from grey sludge into something resembling a movie. A hideous, malformed movie but a movie nonetheless! Idk!
Thought this was gonna be about True Crime for a second. Softball but come on! For the next one I hope they pick SOMETHING to be about.

On rewatch, less grippingly scary but the admirably cold beating heart of the movie is clearer. The way the kids build a space for themselves, while the monster destroys their home and eventually the safe space of the television’s glow. The limits of Kaylee’s protectiveness and maturity exposed when her brother asks her for things she can’t or won’t provide. agonizing first 3 quarters. a lot of jokes cant save the movie from feeling utterly humorless. needledrops as scaffolding to make up for a lack of tension or personality.
massively disagree with people saying mia gives a good performance. it's not her fault. her character sucks so bad.
