In the Heights

In the Heights ★★★★

Overall take:
Hamilton has the catchier songs, but this is my favorite work of Miranda’s thus far. Much more personal and true to life, not that it has to be a comparison. But I think this is Miranda at his most raw. While Hamilton is certainly the “magnum opus,” at the end of the day, there’s more in In The Heights as an entire piece that would make me want to return to it again and again.

Cho managed to utilize the film medium for all its worth that kept it from feeling like a Broadway production turned movie and more like a movie that stands on its own right. While it certainly owes a lot to La La Land (and all of its influences), that’s not a bad thing IMO.

Personal note:
So many emotions watching this as a Latino living in the’s rare you see something capture the complexity of the Latino-immigrant experience in such a beautiful way. It’s good to be back at the movies.
