Predictable but sweet, undercooked but charming, derivative but funny; there’s nothing here that hasn’t been done before, but the comedy is well performed and somehow the Asian-American cultural twist transforms the tired formula into something more authentic, making it one of Netflix’s more superior rom-com efforts.
Side thought: Imagine telling Keanu you wanted to kill him to his face. I mean, yeah it’s acting, but if Keanu is playing himself…is it acting? And when he’s staring back at you during each take of the scene, does he think you’re saying it to him or his character? Either way, Randall Park must have been s*%#ting himself during that scene.
