This is the first film by the Dardenne brothers I've seen, and what struck me was the sheer honesty of their style. There's no self-awareness or irony, the pace of the dialogue and the performances is not artificially slow or fast but rather completely natural. They do this one camera movement again and again, watching a character approach the camera than following them turning a 180 and playing out the rest of the scene. But it works. Magnificent. Once again I feel like an idiot for neglecting a whole area of film for so long.
