When I was a kid I had a friend who I’d occasionally hang out with on a Saturday night. We used to watch whatever action movies were on the air that evening and let me tell you, whenever Speed was on, it was a good night!
The three-act structure of Speed is great: elevator, bus and train — with Reeves losing a shirt layer as he crosses into each act. I used to think the film should have finished with the bus climax, but I’ve grown to enjoy that subway finale quite a bit. This is a kitchen-sink thrill ride with enough action to fill three movies, it's fitting then that the film continues its velocity and doesn’t let up. Jon De Bont's directorial accuracy, and Josh Whedon’s script doctoring, make for an exciting piece of action pop, with an absolute pulse-pounding score from Mark Mancini.
