Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood ★★★★★

I can’t believe it’s been a year since I saw this in 70mm in the city. Seriously one of the best days of my life. With every passing month this movie becomes more bittersweet and nostalgic to me. It just came out at such an important time in my life. Right at the brink of a huge change for me.

I am forever glad I chose to see this film projected on film for the first time. It was an out of body experience. I supported a dying mode of exhibition when I purchased my ticket last July. I am glad I did. I will never forget the moment the screening ended. The image slowly died out and we were left with a black screen. For a moment, the theater was quiet. Nobody moved to leave. Not even the noise of a crumpled bag of popcorn. That was the first time I had heard this foreign sound. A sound I had never encountered. The sound of a projector. The slow rattle of film running through the projector lasted for an eternity before it finally died out too. I have to believe that was not a death rattle, but a rattle of life. One that isn’t ready to die out just yet. This movie is a testament and love letter to many things, but it’s a living and breathing reminder of the beauty of film and celluloid.

Also, has there ever been a better needle drop than Out of Time? I think not.
