Aquarius ★★★½

No doubt it has a memorable central character with a strong POV (a team effort from the actress and the writer/director) and a full lived-in world — which, although too early to say, seems to be Kleber Mendonça Filho's most distinct mark as an auteur. But even though I feel enamored with Clara and her personal life (her past, her family situation, her relationship with friends and dates and art), the way Aquarius panders for the enlightened section of the middle class (to the extention of putting poor, black evangelicals as one of the symbols of "things that bother a happy life") bums me out quite a bit. Lots of love for that ending, tho.
