Winter Sleep

Winter Sleep ★★★★

After over 3 hours and 15 minutes it is difficult to distil exactly what sort of reaction this film engenders. In one hand it basically doesn't go anywhere and the relatively unique location is mostly squandered. Yet, on the other, this is a rare slice of eloquence with a very intelligently written and performed script that is meaningfully influenced by many classics of modern literature.

The central performance by Haluk Bilginer is slowly spellbinding. At times you feel as if you are eavesdropping on deeply personal and private conversations between sharp minds whom are exploring some very profound social, religious and political themes.

So not a film that will perhaps appeal to a mass audience. But the snob in me quite likes that!
