Matt Bolin’s review published on Letterboxd :
As someone who has dealt with the grief of losing a family member young, Manchester by the Sea really struck an uncomfortable chord with me. I know Affleck is mired in controversy extenuating from 2010 accusations. Removing that from the equation, this is the kind of performance that deserves the Academy's praise. The subtext, motivations, and crux of this film and the dynamics between its characters are all told with what is not said, Affleck's reactions, and at times his actions. You really hope for everyone that Lee Chandler finds piece and begins to move on with his life and experience joy again, but something tells me that life after "fade to black" has a much more depressing and sad ending for Chandler.
