David Blaine: Above the Below 2003
I think I kinda hate Harmony Korine for making me take David Blaine (sorta) seriously here. Blaine is obviously not a very profound artist, but Korine plumbs his shallow depths for some insights on performance, spectatorship and cruelty. By all appearances, Blaine is an exhibitionist and a masochist, but he tortures himself at least partially out of a cruelty toward his audience. Nowhere is this clearer than in the (hopefully) staged stunt where he approaches a woman on the street…

The Girl with All the Gifts 2016
Saw this at a film festival horror marathon where drunk white men were allowed to yell racist, sexist and homophobic slurs at the screen so I missed most of the dialogue, which is a shame, since the movie seems to envision a postapocalyptic future where the old order of white male authority dies out and where the future of humanity lies in the hands of a young black girl. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why all those sad, angry men were shouting slurs in the dark. They know that their time is up.
