MCU REWATCH: (#9)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier was one of the biggest surprised for me. I'm a fan of The First Avenger, but this movie took this character and took a concept to another lever. The Winter Soldier explores themes that haven't been explored before in the MCU. Themes of surveillance, corrupt government and even the "fish out of water" story with Captain America that actually goes to some pretty emotional moments. The Russo brothers take the concept of fighting Hydra from the nostalgic action adventure that is The First Avenger and apply it to a modern world, one where Hydra isn't led by a over-the-top villain like Red Skull, but instead an organization that's corrupted part of the world and is working behind the scenes.
Chris Evans' best performance as the titular character is probably in this movie. He's given a lot more depth and the character of Captain America gets explored a lot more. The scene with him and a sick old Peggy Carter is one of the saddest scenes in the entire MCU. This is one of, if not the best movie in this shared universe.
