Annette

Annette ★★★½

An operatic acid with dreamlike visual and narrative exuberance of defiant radicality, melodically delectable yet reiterative in an incongruous circle of superfluous sonic continuity. A virtuosic musical energy intermingles with a delirious style of dreamy artificiality that is complexly embellished with dark impulses and unavoidable tragedies. It's a film that prides itself on depicting a bizarre world, and perhaps fails to fully exploit its boundless weirdness with sincere emotional impact, but experimental curiosity certainly forms an interest that is impossible to ignore.
