Hereditary ★★★★½

"I never wanted to be your mother."

After A Quiet Place left me cold, I went into Hereditary with some unexpected apprehension regarding its quality. I needn't have worried though, because this was absolutely fantastic. One slightly baggy midsection aside, newcomer Ari Aster has given us a film as meticulous and detailed as one of those dioramas (all the long takes he does are works of eerie beauty), creating a persistently overwhelming atmosphere to match the mercilessly intense performances by the four lead actors. Unpredictable, unsettling, and at times genuinely shocking, Hereditary more than warrants the critical hype, and surely ranks among the best that modern horror movies have to offer.
