The Witch

The Witch ★★★★½

Hm, a historical horror movie set in the 1600s, focusing on English people being terrorised by forces that seem both supernatural and psychologically-based? Obviously I'm talking about The Witch, but that summary sounds like it could be describing A Field in England as well. Fortunately, both films function quite effectively as companion pieces: where Wheatley's effort is more experimental and darkly comedic, Eggers' counterpoint has a more deliberately oppressive register. I was a bit unsure how to respond at first, but the atmosphere and family drama swiftly won me over, and now I'm already looking forward to seeing this again. You know, once I've stopped shivering.
